Whidbey General Hospital installed a new payroll system.  State auditors found that there was not enough control over the system. The hospital is now having to fix $183,000 in overpayments.

Several employees at Whidbey General Hospital are seeing some smaller paychecks as a result of a problem in a new payroll system.

In a report released Feb. 18, state auditors reported hospital officials did not have adequate controls over payroll to safeguard public resources.

The result of that condition caused the hospital to make $183,000 worth of overpayments to employees, the report said.

Whidbey General Hospital is busy recouping the money by deducting from the affected employees’ paychecks as allowed by state law, spokeswoman Trish Rose said in an email. Continue reading…

Valley General Hospital Audit

An audit of Valley General Hospital revealed that the hospital can’t go on without making financial changes. The hospital continually spends more than it brings in. The hospital began suffering in 2009 when the economy took a dive.

The state Auditor’s Office warned Valley General Hospital that it needs to shape up financially or the hospital won’t endure.

Financial reports show the hospital blew through $6 million in reserves in five years and continues to overspend its revenues despite cutting back expenditures.

The hospital went through major changes last year to try to turn things around. Its levy increase voters approved in 2013 may generate an additional $2.4 million for the hospital this year.

The auditor’s office cast its warning in its recently released audit of the hospital’s 2012 finances. The hospital’s situation was dire enough to warrant an official finding from the auditor’s office that the hospital is “at risk of not meeting its financial obligations or providing services at current levels.”

Valley General is now affiliated with EvergreenHealth of Kirkland and voters approved a hospital tax levy boost that takes effect later this year. Continue reading…
